Trip Introduction;
The region of Mustang is widely known as ‘The Forbidden Kingdom’ where vibrant cultures dating back to thousands of years is still practiced. Located north-west of the country – Mustang was opened for tourists only after 1992. Recent road construction in this region has surely provided an optional adventure related activities such as Mountain Biking. Upper Mustang Biking Trip is a perfect option for keen mountain bikers to explore one of the most remote region of the planet that comprises of priceless natural wonders, breathtaking valleys and ancient trading routes used mainly for trade linking Nepal-Tibet-India.

In addition one gets to experience ancient Tibetan culture and tradition which is still practiced by locals and gain unlimited biking adventure in the enchanting spot of the planet. Our biking adventure takes us to Lo-Manthang which is the walled city (popular trekking destination) and the unofficial capital of Mustang. It is one of the last places on earth where ancient Tibetan culture is still practiced by locals for daily life activities. Upper Mustang Biking Trip with Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition starts at Kathmandu. We will spend a full day riding along fascinating trails around Kathmandu valley exploring the villages and countless temples. The following day we will be transferred by drive journey from Kathmandu to the beautiful Pokhara city. From Pokhara, we take a scenic flight to the airstrip of Jomsom – the starting point of our biking trip. We start our adventurous mountain biking by riding along the Kali Gandaki valley over a jeep track trail towards the medieval settlement of Kagbeni. From there our trail is mostly uphill riding on a flat jeep trail towards Muktinath – a famous pilgrimage site. We continue our uphill riding as well as pushing and enjoy downhill riding journey as we pass through the villages of Chaile, Syangboche and Tsarang as we enter the land of Upper Mustang into the awe-inspiring walled city of Lo-Manthang.

Lo-Manthang is the capital of Mustang that comprises of well preserved Tibetan culture and fascinating ancient monasteries. We will spend a full day exploring around Lo-Manthang before continuing our exciting mountain biking over some new single-track enjoying the views of surrounding high peaks and beautiful mountain valleys. With mostly downhill riding we head towards Marpha – also known as ‘The Apple Garden’. Our adventure filled downhill riding continues as we approach Tatopani. Tatopani in Nepali means – Hot Water, here we can enjoy and relax at the natural hot spring. It will be a perfect way to wash away the sweat and tiredness after the exciting and thrilling mountain biking adventure. Leaving Tatopani, we will ride over an easy jeep track trail to finally end our mountain biking trip at Beni. The memorable and adventurous Upper Mustang Biking Trip with Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition ends with a drive from Beni to Pokhara and another drive from Pokhara back to Kathmandu.

Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu [1345m/4411ft] and transfer to Hotel
Our airport arrival and departure representative will be at Tribhuwan International Airport on your arrival schedule. You will be transferred to hotel and our staff will help you until check-in procedure ends at Hotel. Either you can have rest at Hotel or visit NGT’s office. In the evening, join our welcome dinner program organized by Nepal Guide Treks & Expedition Team, we also organize a formal program; meet with our guide with full extent of information and discussion regarding our Upper Mustang Biking Trip.

Day 02: Cycling tour at Kathmandu Valley
Today, we make a cycling tour around Kathmandu valley which directly beneficial for warm up as well as sightseeing and exploration around the valley. We need this spare day in Kathmandu to complete all process and permits for Upper Mustang. There are several mountain biking trails beyond the valley for short day trips that offers to explore Nepalese culture, ancient temples, monuments, heritage sites and traditions.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara [820m/2689ft][5 hrs Drive]
Today we drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara following the scenic zigzag roads, scenic views of Nepalese green hills, bank of Trishuli River along the Nepal’s biggest Prithivi Highway. Pokhara is a beautiful town set on the banks of the Fewa Lake. Pokhara is tourist’s paradise with full of natural as well as cultural heritage sites such as lakes, caves, temples of Buddhist and Hindus along with mountains. The city is situated on the base of world’s popular Annapurna and Fishtail mountain ranges. It is smaller and much less hectic than Kathmandu.

Day 04: Morning flight to Jomsom [2713m/8898ft] & Ride to Kagbeni [2800m/9184ft][12 km]
We take a morning scenic flight from Pokhara to exact biking trip starting point at Jomsom which takes approximately 20 minutes. After we land at Jomsom, make ready our bikes, backpacks and all essential stuffs then head towards Kagbeni.  We continuously ride through following the world’s deepest Kali Gandaki Gorge, flat and rocky jeep trails and encounter with several trekkers along the route since we follow famous trekking trails of Annapurna & Mustang regions. Finally reach at beautiful village of Upper Mustang situated in the Valley of Kali Gandaki River, dinner and overnight in tea house lodge.

Day 05: Ride from Kagbeni to Muktinath [3800m/12467ft][20 km]
Take early morning breakfast and hurry to get started our ride for early morning sunrise views over the Himalayas. Today, we ride through almost ascending trails is quite harder. Thus we follow continuously the bumpy jeep road connected until reach at Muktinath. We take a rest for a while in our lunch stop at Jharkot, with good scenery. Finally reach at the famous religious temple of Muktinath. At evening, explore temples, icons, art, architecture, monuments and mysterious legends which attract thousands of devotees every year.

Day 06: Ride from Muktinath to Chaile [3050m/10004ft][18 km]
After having breakfast, we start our riding continuously ascending before reaching at Gyu La Pass then descend to Chusang. Today we begin riding through actual the forbidden land of Upper Mustang. After taking lunch and having rest for a while at Chusang, we start following the bank of Kali Gandaki River before crossing the bridge. After there, we follow gradual ascending ride towards a little charming village of Chaile for our overnight. At evening, we explore around village, ancient monasteries and buildings with good views of Mt. Nilgiri and Kaligandaki Valley.

Day 07: Ride from Chaile to Syangboche [3800m/12464ft][20 km]
Followed by early morning breakfast, we start our adventurous riding. Today’s ride is harder and mostly uphill since we need to cross four different Himalayan passes in this single day. Initially, we start following the trail that ascends towards north, by riding and pushing. After accomplish our third pass with adventurous riding and pushing, we start following the fast flowing descends. We take a lunch at Samar village, rest for a while then again head towards Syangboche.

Day 08: Ride from Syangboche to Tsarang [3620m/11873ft][22 km]
Today, we start the ride initially with short ascends towards a minor pass followed by two further scenic passes. We can have great views of Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Nilgiri and their massive ranges from those passes. Along the route, having with numerous number of ascend and descends, we pass through beautiful Tibetan villages such as Gilling, Ghami, explore several mani walls, fluttering prayer flags, chortens, monasteries. We make a final half an hour descend to reach at Tsarang.

Day 09: Ride from Tsarang to Lo Manthang [3730m/12234ft][20 km]
Today is the great day of our entire Upper Mustang Biking Trip since we reach to our final destination, capital of Upper Mustang – Lo Manthang. The day is comparatively easy to ride with only one scenic pass named “Lo La Pass at 3810 meters”. We ride through scenic viewpoints, stop for some photographs, enjoy with the scenery, and spend lots of time with amazing feel. After crossing the pass, we follow soft and easy trail that takes us to reach at Lo Manthang within an hour. At evening, free for self exploration and walking around.

Day 10: Rest/Exploration day at Lo Manthang
We take a full day exploration around Lo Manthang. The kingdom contains around 150 houses including the residences of many Lamas. We also explore the four major temples in around the city with huge clay statue of Buddha, elaborates mandalas painted on the walls with mysterious legends. Explore the unique culture and distinct tradition here at the capital of the Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang.

Day 11: Ride from Lo-Manthang to Ghami [3490m/11447ft][30 km]
After taking breakfast, we leave Lo Manthang, our biking adventure heads back through new single-track route. Along the route, we ascend continuously towards two scenic passes which are above 4000 meters from there we can have great views of mountains as well as beautiful Mustang Valley. En-route we also explore a famous monastery in the region; Ghar Gompa and then continue our ride towards Ghami village. At evening we will be free to explore in around the village.

Day 12: Ride from Ghami to Samar [3150m/10332ft][32 km]
As we customized the itinerary to avoid same route towards Lo Manthang for more great views, more exploration and to experience something different in a single trip. After breakfast, we continue our journey first towards our lunch stop at Syangboche, where we take fresh meal and rest for a while. After there, we ascend for an hour cross a scenic pass then descend to reach Samar village.

Day 13: Ride from Samar to Marpha [2670m/8757ft][30 km]
Today, we take early morning breakfast and leave Samar quickly to ascend towards scenic pass at 3737 meter. From there, we have great sunrise views reflecting over the Himalayas. Then, we follow quick flow of descend towards Chaile. We ride along the bank of Kali Gandaki River towards Kagbeni. We take our lunch either at Chhusang or at Kagbeni. After having lunch, rest for a while we again continue our journey towards beautiful village of Marpha. Marpha is a Tibetan refugee settlement surrounded with beautiful apple garden where we can taste local apple Brandy.

Day 14: Ride from Marpha to Tatopani [1190m/3903ft] [48 Kilometer/5-6 hours Cycling]
Today we leave Marpha riding through rugged section of jeep trail towards Ghasa and then to Tatopani. Today’s trip is pleasant, scenic and easier than previous hard trails. We continue passing through world’s deepest Kali Kagdaki gorge, heading southwards following dirt descending roads. En-route we cross several village settlements and beautiful forests gives bikers chill feels before reaching at the last settlement of Mustang district Ghasa. After reaching Ghasa, we continue towards Tatopani through tropical climates. Tatopani is famous for its hot springs; one can enjoy bathing with natural hot water.

Day 15: Ride from Tatopani to Beni [830m/2722ft][35 km] & Drive to Pokhara.
Last day of Upper Mustang Biking Trip, most of the trail descends beside the Kali Gandaki River, passing through several villages until we reach at Beni. Along the route we can have view of Mt. Nilgiri South as well as green vegetations. We take a drive from Beni, following Pokhara Baglung highway that takes us to reach at Pokhara. Evening free for personal activities, visit around the city or boating at Fewa Lake.

Day 16: Drive from Pokhara back to Kathmandu
It takes approximately four to five hours drive to reach Kathmandu from Pokhara. We drive along Prithivi Highway which offers scenic hilly zigzag roads through the banks of Trishuli River.

Day 17: Leisure day at Kathmandu
You would surely like to see as much of Kathmandu as possible. An early start is practical to visit the temples of Kathmandu. Also, walking around the shopping area of Thamel is worth spending quality time at Kathmandu. We will have a final meal together in the evening.

Important Info

Skills and Fitness Requires for Mountain Biking Adventure:
Mountain Biking is a best way to explore mountains through adventure riding. Adventure motivated and an experienced biker can easily choose the trip. Bikers should have ability to tackle the ride at least 6-7 hours per day in rough ascends/descends, muddy, dry, loose, bedrock and steeper sections of mountain trails, sometimes while in gradual ascends – have to push the ride. Before planning to have any mountain biking adventure, it is a great idea to do physical fitness activities with daily warm ups, physical workouts, join physical fitness clubs and so on as per your choice. While in mountain biking adventure trip with us, there might arise high altitude sickness since this trip contains comparatively higher altitudes than any other biking trips in around the world. To avoid from such sickness we will provide basic fundamental training which you will have to follow from our biking expert guide.

Autumn (September, October, November) and spring (March, April, May) are considered as a best mountain biking adventure in Nepal. Similarly, the best seasons for mountain biking in Tibet are May, September and October. During those days, the weather would be more clear, sunny and warm in mountain trails. Mountain Biking adventure seeking clients can easily do this trips throughout the year by avoiding monsoon three months (June, July & August).
