Trip Introduction;
Makalu Circuit Trek with Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition is an excellent opportunity for adventure seeking trekkers to explore the less visited Makalu region as well as the popular Everest region of Nepal. The massive Makalu-Barun National Park is sandwiched between Kanchenjunga and Solu Khumbu (Everest) region and is well known for being wild and high. Dozens of stunning peaks surround the Honku river and Honku basin to the west of the national park including the popular Mera Peak. Mt Makalu – the fifth highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 8468 meters rises to the north. A mixture of Sherpa and Rai ethnic communities reside throughout the southern valleys of the park. The center of the park is home to various species of wild animals including the endangered and exclusive Snow Leopard and Red Pandas. Apart from the exploration of rich and less explored natural wonders, the trek includes crossing of three technical alpine passes – Sherpani Col 6180m, the West Col 6190m, and Amphu Labsta 5845m and then head towards the Solu Khumbu or Everest region of Nepal.

Makalu Circuit Trek with Nepal Guide Treks and Expeditions starts at Kathmandu. After spending a full day sightseeing around Kathmandu, we will take a scenic flight to the airstrip of Tumlingtar. After landing at Tumlingtar, we will take two hours drive towards Khadbari – the starting point of the trek. We start our trek from here passing through picturesque villages and terraced farmlands, with good views of Makalu our trail follows several ups and downs through Num and Seduwa towards Mumbuk. Our trail enters an ancient lateral moraine through which Barun Nadi flows before arriving at the stone huts of Makalu Base Camp. Makalu Base Camp is considered as one of the best mountain viewpoints in Nepal. Our trek from there goes along the south of Barun Glacier Valley towards Swiss Base Camp and from there a steep ascent towards Sherapani Col Base Camp at the snout of the glacier.

Acclimatization is very crucial at higher altitudes to avoid mental and physical sickness. Thus, we with an additional day of rest for acclimatization and exploration at Sherpani Col Base Camp, we continue our trek towards the crossing of challenging and technical alpine passes. Following the trail by the side of the glacier, we make a climb towards the top of Sherpani Col at 6180 meters that require fixed ropes and handlines. From the top, we descend vigorously down to West Barun Glacier and head towards the crossing of West Col at 6190 meters. After a tiring climb to the top of the pass, we descend down to Honku basin and towards the crossing of difficult and dangerous pass in Nepal – Amphu Labsta Pass at 5850 meters. After crossing Amphu Labsta Pass our trail follows the steep rocky route towards Chhukung. From Chhukung, a rather easy trekking of mostly downhill passing through Tyangboche and Namche Bazaar will bring us to Lukla. The memorable and adventurous Makalu Circuit Trek with Nepal Guide Treks and Expeditions ends with a scenic flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu.

Best Seasons for Trekking:

Basically, three months in autumn – September, October, November and 3 months in spring – March, April, May total 6 months are considered as a best season for trekking in Nepalese Himalayas. During the seasons, the weather would be clear, sunny and warm in mountains that’s why trekker can get great opportunities to have splendid views of mountains. Apart from that, some adventure seeking trekker also loves to have their trekking holiday in December, January and February to avoid trekker’s crowed and to get peaceful environment along the route. Monsoon seasons (June, July & August) would not be perfect trekking holiday since it will be affected by rains. But, one can enjoy short trek, hike and also can plan for rain shadow parts during the monsoon.
